Our @BambuuBrush mission is to educate and inspire millions of people around the world to make one simple change away from plastic to more sustainable products like our bamboo toothbrushes. We’ve already helped more than 1.5million people change from plastic to bamboo toothbrushes and that means a massive 1.5million plastic toothbrushes are not ending up in landfill or even worse in our oceans.
The @BambuuBrush Founders, Tommie and Rebecca recently took a production team to China to show you guys exactly where your @BambuuBrush is grown, harvested and created and how sustainable the production line is.
Here’s how it’s done:
Growing your Bamboo
Every @BambuuBrush starts with a bamboo shrub growing on a mountain in China. We work with a local producer to help local communities grow and harvest it. Bamboo has been used in China for thousands of years and only recently have we started to see bamboo products become popular in the western world. It’s fast becoming one of/if not the most productive and most sustainable materials in the world.
Harvesting your Bamboo
The bamboo shoots are harvested roughly 1foot above ground to allow the root system to continue to develop and regrow again (this being in a different direction this time). At the plantation each bamboo shoot is then cut into manageable lengths with different part of the shoot being used for different products and materials. Every bit of the bamboo gets used, right down to the sawdust that gets bundled up and transported to make fibre for clothing/ paperboards and a variety of other products.
Cutting your Bamboo
From the plantation, the bamboo is transported to a nearby factory to be hand cut to length, and sanded down before being allowed to dry for a certain time dependant on the season and humidity levels.
Treating your Bamboo
The cut and dried bamboo is then entered into a hand machine that shapes your piece of bamboo into our simple and minimalistic @BambuuBrush shape. They is achieved by each piece shaved around a template. From here the bamboo toothbrush is treated with a vegetable oil to give your @BambuuBrush it's quality and resistance to water. Of course, with your @BambuuBrush being a natural material we need to treat the product to stop natural absorbance of moisture especially being used in the bathroom.
Punching your Bamboo
The next element of the production line is the hole in which your bristles are pressed into. 39 precise holes are punched into the top of your bamboo at an incredible rate with 4 toothbrushes being punched at a time.
Tufting your Bamboo
The charcoal infused bristles are then pressed in the head of the @BambuuBrush which is called tufting, with roughly 40 bristles being tufted into each of the 39 holes (which you see in the production video above). The machine that produces this is automated by Ai to perfectly add the correct amount of bristles to each hole and make sure that the toothbrush head is facing the correct direction to reduce any waste. At the end of the process, each toothbrush is manually assessed to make sure the bristles have being pressed and tufted correctly and there are no irregular or loose bristles that may cause problems to you guys when using.
Stamp of Approval
The penultimate stage of the process is where you @BambuuBrush get our stamp of approval for everything we are striving to achieve by getting our @BambuuBrush laser engraved on our beautiful bamboo handle. The slow-mo video in the production video above is amazing to see the product going from a single piece of bamboo to a positive message of hope that we can all make simple changes away from plastic to an @BambuuBrush
Packaging your Bamboo
The finished product is packed in our distinctive kraft paper and 100% compostable boxes and packaged to be ready to be sent to our UK offices where boxes of @BambuuBrushes arrive at our Hertfordshire HQ to be packed into our
