Eco friendly products and environmentally friendly packaging are on the rise. Iceland is just about to launch a loose fresh produce trial as their latest movements towards committing to eliminate plastic packaging from all own-label products by the end of 2023. Which is quite an accomplishment for a UK company, hopefully the rest will now follow.

The Food Warehouse in north Liverpool will be where the trial will take place very soon, and gives customers the choice of purchasing loose fresh produce instead of plastic-packaged products. Iceland have confirmed that they will also cut the price of the loose produce so it is cheaper than plastic packaged items so help customers to choose the plastic free options.

In over 900 stores of Iceland's stores they have already changed many areas of the business to become more sustainable and towards becoming plastic free, plastic packaging for lemons have been replaced with cotton netting, recycling bags for bananas have been removed.

“Over 12 million tonnes of plastic enters the world’s oceans every year and the retail industry can no longer ignore the plastics tidal wave which is coming our way. We all have a part to play in tackling the issue and Iceland is constantly looking for ways to reduce its own plastic footprint, as we work towards our commitment. We are looking forward to seeing how our customers respond to the trial and taking forward learnings to inform the rest of our journey.”

Richard Walker, Iceland’s managing director
